Some Islington facts
Much of the housing stock in Islington is terraced and party structures (and the party walls surveyor in some form) have existed since before the Great Fire of London.
In fact, Islington is home to the oldest surviving terraced houses in London! The four buildings sitting on the west side of Newington Green pre-date the fire of London and survived two world wars.
Originally a mansion house with ornate gardens and orchards existed on the land, but it was demolished to make way for a more lucrative financial return from terraced walls.
One building has a interesting history and played an important part in American independence. They boast some famous visitors, including Founding Fathers of the United States Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine!
The oldest party wall in London
The game “Monolopy” can be blamed for many family disputes (fortunately not party wall disputes), but did you know that the stop “Angel” is only on the board because of a cup of tea?
The area of Angel in Islington received its name by association with the Angel Inn, which was established in the 17th Century.
The reason ‘The Angel, Islington’ can be found on the Monopoly game board is because the licensees of the game met up for tea at the Islington Lyon’s Corner House – which was built on the site of the original Angel Inn.
No. 25 Noel Road, Islington bears a plaque to the playwright, Joe Orton.
What the plaque doesn’t say is that Joe Orton spent three bizarre years spiriting away books from the local Islington library, carefully trimming out the illustrations, then using them to make new outlandish book covers before secretly returning them to the library bookcases.
One librarian was particularly offended to discover a tome of poems by John Betjeman now sporting a cover with a heavily tattooed man on a motorbike as its centrepiece!
Orton was eventually apprehended in the 1960’s, and sentenced to six months for malicious damage to Islington public property.
